My fiance and I rented a "climate-controlled" storage unit from Public Storage for $77/month. When we went to collect our things months later, everything was soaking wet and covered in mold and rust due to ground water coming up from the back of the unit. We tried calling the office twice that day to discuss the problem and left a message the second time (both calls made during office hours). Obviously, we had to leave our things there in order to show them the destruction and discuss what our options were. They did not call us back until a week later, after we made a third call. When the relief manager (Robert) called us back, he said they would not give us any refunds or compensation and that they were continuing to charge us storage fees because our things were still there. I said the only reason our things were still there is because we were waiting to talk to them about the damage before vacating the unit. They insisted that we pay for the additional time our things had been sitting there before they would allow us to enter our unit to show them the damage. But when my fiance went to the unit, they had never reset our access code to allow us to enter the unit. Once we were finally able to enter the premises to show the management the damage, we decided to leave our property there for them to dispose of it because it was unsalvageable due to the thick layer of black mold over everything. After filing a complaint through the Better Business Bureau, the company still refused to refund us for the total loss of our property or for any of the storage rental fees we had paid for the time our things were in storage, despite the premium rates they had charged us for our "climate controlled" unit.
