A reputable business treats customers with courtesy and guarantees satisfaction, however, based on my experience with Houndstooth, the owner does not stand behind her services and engages in unethical business practices.
My dog has had non-anesthesia cleanings for more than three (3) years with another company in a Veterinarian’s office so I’m familiar with the procedure. Scaling, polishing and rinsing always resulted in clean, white teeth. This expectation was conveyed during the initial telephone conversation with the pet store owner and she replied that Kathy would do so.
Per Houndstooth, “each appointment begins with a friendly introduction to our technician who will perform a visual exam of the mouth and head. Any abnormalities will be charted and discussed for appropriate treatment. Your pet will then be comfortably positioned and gently introduced to the scaling procedure. Your technician will then proceed to thoroughly remove the tartar and plaque from all surfaces of the teeth using a selection of appropriate instruments. The cleaning is followed by polishing and home care instruction.”
Despite her confirmation and Houndstooth advertising, Ms. Shafer scaled the exterior area of the teeth only for the same fee of $85.00 and refused to complete the procedure when I showed her that they were still yellow. Ultimately, plaque was completely removed by a physician at an additional cost.
Correspondence was forwarded to the pet store, Naturally for Paws, and Houndstooth expressing my disappointment but neither owner replied. Initial attempts by the BBB to contact Kathy Shafer were ignored, however, in June 2010 a response was provided. After eleven months, with the assistance of the BBB, my complaint was resolved and a refund was issued in September 2010. As a devoted pet parent, I would only recommend non-anesthesia dental cleaning approved by a physician or supervised in a Veterinarian office. In all cases, refuse payment if the service is not delivered.
